"Tarek stopped in his tracks, quietly watching the young woman. She was singing, combing long auburn hair over a slender, bare shoulder with a comb made from seashells. Her skin was as pale as a lily, unuse to the sun, her body graceful and as slender as any noblewoman’s. Wondering how or why the maiden was sitting over in the water, Tarek was about to call out to her when his eyes caught the lower half of her body. Where legs should have been there was a tail. Violet, iridescent scales shimmered in the sunlight, the colour dancing and that was when the knight realized that the maiden was a mermaid.

He stood rooted to the spot, not believing that something from a fairy tale was in front of him, alive and made flesh. Tarek stared at the mermaid, mouth agape. Something inside of the knight tugged at him, watching her hair fall from the come to cover her bare bosom. In her song Tarek felt that the mermaid was singing for him, even unaware of his presence. A want, indescribable, built inside of him. Tarek was unaware he had moved towards her, up to his ankles in the surf, until the mermaid stopped singing.

Eyes the colour of the sky stared at him in alarm. For the space of heartbeats they stared at one another, Tarek blinked, and then she was gone. He cried out wordlessly - for the want of her, the desire to hear her sing again, the need to see her once more - but did nothing else.
